Cowart's Common Room
Victim of the Weather

I have just received an email telling me that the new version of Kirkheaton Show has been cancelled. It was due to happen on 21st July. Unfortunately, the new field does not drain well and also the owner takes a silage crop off it.
I am not on the committee any more, so was not there last night to hear the debate, but it is very sad. I have felt all along that we should have cut our losses after 3 years of bad weather and not making any money (despite a huge amount of hard work) and then losing the use of the field (for good reasons)
Now we wait to hear what the future holds. The reserves have pretty well run out and they are talking of fund-raising in order to continue. I know that the Show is 56 years old, but is it not better to bow out gracefully to fate?

Pimsonthelawn's Avatar So sad, I think that quite a few of these shows have been cancelled a few years together.

Camilla's Avatar Think you are right Withy especially when you and the other committee previously put in so much hard work, but as you say Withy it is sad.

Blackbird's Avatar What a difficult decision to make but it takes so much work and commitment to make things happen and it usually falls to just a few. Is it possible to merge with another show?

Fairy Nuff's Avatar It is a shame to loose these traditional shows but if they don't have enough support to at least break even there's not much we can do to save them.
Most of our Village Galas (like a village fete) have gone the same way simply through lack of interest from Parents to even turn up with the Kids...often sending the kids on their own just to get them out of their hair...sad to see 20 or 30 children watching 3 parents in the parents race!

Westerwitch's Avatar Alot of the Highland Games shows have been cancelled for this weekend and no doubt others will follow . . .

The big Scone fair got cancelled last weekend as the place turned into a quagmire . . . it always amazes me that people continue to do these shows despite the awful weather . . . HS and I never sign up for any of them for the stalls because the risk of losing your money and getting soaked is just to high - not to mention being left out of pocket with stock you have made.
