Cowart's Common Room
My adopted cat update

Camilla kindly asked how my cat was getting on so I thought I'd update. Her original owners property remained unlet and so the cat slept in their little shed which I propped open with a watering can. She continued to come to ours every night for food, but only to sneak into our shed kitchen when no-one was around, so we gave her space to do that. I didnt want her to get too friendly with us anyway before we went on holiday in case she felt abandoned twice, but I did go every day looking for her and calling her name. One time she was on window sill and allowed me to stroke her.

After six weeks unlet, there is now new tenants - with dogs, and they have filled up the shed with all their belongings. There is a tumble down shed in the woody area at the back of the yard/carpark adjoining my home so I went looking for her there, and found her but she ran away and wouldnt let me stroke her. Poor thing, she must hate all the changes. But I felt the old sacks where she had been sitting, found the warm place, and put her own blanket there.

I catch a glimpse of her most days, and the food gets eaten so I know she is ok, and not much more I can do. She knows where we are if she wants us, but while the weather is still mild I reckon she will 'camp out'.

Faith x

Lily's Avatar She sounds happy enough in her own little way. Hard not to judge by our own human ideas of companionship though. Must have been a big shock to see scary dogs in her old home. If she has food and somewhere to shelter perhaps that's all she wants for the moment?

Arosebyanyothername's Avatar I am sure you are doing the right thing, Faith. You are giving her the space and time to make her own decisions. She has food and shelter and a friend if she wants one.
There are many people in the world who cannot say the same.
Not that a cat is any less deserving.

Fairy Nuff's Avatar I guess she'll come round as the days get colder and she gets over the ignominy of being left behind (they can be so snooty about anything that wasn't their decision...always like to be in charge Cats!)

Ivy's Avatar I have the feeling there are two kinds of cat One sort is absolutely people centered , like ours. You can take them anywhere as long as they are with you or other kind people (like my DIL and FIL who are minding our baby while we are on holiday) and those who are location centered like the one you adopted.

Camilla's Avatar Thank you Faith for the update of cat. Don't think cat will go back to her old home little shed now as dogs are now there. Good to hear there is another shed in the wooded area near you, does it have a door on, obviously she can get in and out. Who does this shed belong to Faith? I so hope cat can keep using it for warmth and safety. She must miss her other owners, good that she has you as a very kind gal to look out for her. Perhaps in time the cat will come into your home more Faith, know she is quite a nervous cat though.

Faith's Avatar Thanks for the replies. Yours made me think Rosie - it is true that maybe she has more than some!

The shed belongs, I suppose, to the private estate that I live on. It's tumbledown, with one door hanging off, - where the cat gets in, but got a roof and seems fairly dry. Mink used to be in there but they seem to have moved on. thank goodness! Not a bad pad, if you are not too fussy! No-one seems to go there now, but I intend to go over every couple of days and keep an eye on it, just in case they decide to demolish it or do something nearby. It's all rather overgrown and become a dumping ground! But fine secret hideaway for a cat!

Pimsonthelawn's Avatar Your cat sounds happy enough she gets regular food and has a shelter, maybe she is timid and prefers life slightly away from everyone.

Westerwitch's Avatar What was she like when she lived with her previous owners? ie did she live in the house and was she an affectionate cat, or has she always preferred to be out of doors and independent?

Faith's Avatar WW - She was shy around other people - for example when I fed her when they were on hols I never saw her! - but she was affectionate to them, especially the guy. When she was with us before she escaped, we had one evening where she played with the toys I'd bought and sat in the sitting room with us.
