Cowart's Common Room
No electricity

Yesterday we went to the Thanksgiving Service for a connection of Geoff's. Apart from too many too long hymns played too slowly, it was a good service with the large church full. We had wondered whether to venture out as the snow had begun and the wind was gusting to strong gale.
When we got the house for the wake, the marquee was being dismantled. The gable end had blown in in the morning with trestle tables carrying china, blowing over too.
The weather was so foul that not many of the large congregation had come on, so we fitted into the house alright. I drove us home over roads that were not too bad with no real snow drifts. However, we soon found that the electricity had gone off. A kind neighbour came to see if we were OK and told us that it was over a wide area. We closed down - the propane fire was lit in the sitting room and all doors were closed. As we have an AGA we had hot water and could have a hot supper, which we ate in the sitting room. We had to TALK Rolling Eyes
Hot water bottles had to do instead of our lovely electric blankets and I didn't have a bath - not enough hot water and the bathroom too cold!
Some of this morning was spent attending to the little handicapped lady I have told you about before. Since I last mentioned her she has led us a merry dance, but we could not leave her to freeze with not heating and not even a hot drink. I took her a thermos of tea and a farmer and his wife helped me get a calor gas heater from the WI hut to keep her warm.
Joy of joys - about half an hour ago, the power came back on. I am incredibly stupid because I have just realised that I could have comunicated with you all - this thing has its battery charged, so I could have used it. Oh dear - it must be the deterioration of the brain EmbarassedLaughing

Re:
Fennie's Avatar It all sounds horrendous, Withy. But glad that all is now well. It is pretty cold here, too. So good of you to think of your neighbour. Oh hear us when we cry to Thee for those in peril on the sea...and all that.

Re:
Mountainear's Avatar We've had unexpected snow today - I thought it would not come as far south and west as us. But no, it has snowed since 2.00 am this morning and wet flakes are still falling. A fantastic amount has fallen but as the temperature hasn't dropped it has been largely manageable for the latter half of the day at least.

Like you we lost the power but lit the log burner and fortunately could heat water on at the gas hob for a hot drink. Gold medals to the electricity engineers who have been out all day trying to fix the fault - and trying to find a fallen branch on a line in Powys must be hard, hard work. Somebody even came to check that we were OK. Could have hugged him.

Perhaps days like this bring out the best in people - we look out for our neighbours. What a change from last week though!

Lampworkbeader's Avatar Glad you survived it all Withy - what a good neighbour you are. How would you like to come and live next door to me?

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar So pleased you are ok and were able to help your neighbour.

You couldn't have commnicated with us - your laptop might be charged, but your Broadband needs power Blink

For once despite the sudden snow we didn't lose power.

Re:
Ivy's Avatar Goodness and I thought we had a tough time with the weather being so foul. Son arrived from Argentina yesterday and I brought him his winter coat to the airport when I picked him up. Colder then when he left 4 weeks ago Sad Poor chap overheard the conversation of two taxi drivers who complained they were freezing at 26C (78.8F) . What would the have made of our 3.5 ( 38.3F) ? Whithy you not only can come and work at my shop I'd like you to move in next door tooVery Happy
