Cowart's Common Room

Here I am and I haven't been driven over the edge, just somehow shipped a worm that is sending out these weird emails to everyone in my Hotmail address book and annoyingly also to posters of blogs that I have commented upon.

I am really not sure what one does in this situation other than apologise to everyone. The messages are very obviously spam and I have received similar messages from other people who have been infected by this or similar worms.

Does the worm just write out to everyone and then leave you alone?

I am not sure that changing my password will help as the worm is already there. I could close the account of course, though I'd rather not do that as I use it regularly and it's the account I use with Paypal etc.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Mountainear's Avatar I've just PM'd you to tell you about it! What a pain.

Perhaps you can change your password back again when it's 'gone away' or whatever worms do when their work here is done.

Blackbird's Avatar Oh Fennie,
This sort of thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago- waking up to undeliverable emails from my account and on closer view- many delivered. I felt very embarrassed although I hadn't done anything wrong. I did contact an elderly friend because I was afraid that she might open the link by mistake. Everyone else I figured would know better.

I went through changing my password, getting locked out of my account and then changing the password 2 more times. Everything has been okay since. Oh, and I ran a full scan on my computer and it found 2 trojans- which it dispatched. It was really a horrible experience and although I've known others that it happened to, I sort of thought that it wouldn't happen to me. Good luck getting rid of everything and back to normal.

Westerwitch's Avatar It is unlikely to be a virus on your computer as you have a Mac. Usually changing your password stops future access . . . it is more a viral thing than an worm I believe. Might be worth going through and deleting any spam emails, or emails you don't want in case they are carrying the virus.
