Cowart's Common Room
I CAN'T SLEEP CHAT POST

Good Evening Owls!

Can't believe I have got here earlier tonight without falling asleep on that sofa.!

The weather, yes lots of snow and more on it's way, shall we have a white Christmas again this year?

Just going to hop in to pyjams and make a hot coffee, hope to see an owl or two later.

If you can't sleep and there are others on line then have a natter here.

Night Night, & Sweet Dreams.

Re:
Frances's Avatar Camilla, it's grand to be here earlier than in recent evenings.

Don't you like that Santa hat on our Coo?

I've read a few blogs today about various snowfalls across the UK. You all are way ahead of us. We've still got a few leaves left on our trees.

I've replied to your pm.

See you here again in a few minutes. xo

Re:
Well, this is an uncertain kind of "justice."

Bear shows up, and nobody else is here, who was here! Even Miss Sadie is disappointed. This is happening way too often!

Had a quick chat with Max; our Deputy Chief Minder reports everything is in good order. (I am so glad that Max is doing such a fine job; great relief for the Bear.)

Nonetheless, stalwarts ever, Sadie and I shall go climbing o'er the snow drifts, searching for Owls.

TTFN.

Silverhead's Avatar Hi Rob Bear ,I've just returned after a tour of the site. How are you now? You had us worried for a while there.

Re:
Silverhead, we're delaying our departure.

I'm doing acceptably for the state I'm in. We've got lots of cold and snow; have had for several weeks. Understand that some in Britain are now getting the same.

I'd be pleased to send you some of our snow, if you'd care for it.

And how are you keeping, Silverhead? Besides the cold and all that sort of stuff?

Re
Silverhead's Avatar Hope i haven't missed you. It's been a while since I "caught sight of you " we're strangers who pass in the night, though it's probably day time with you.

It's still day (officially) as in 6:45 p.m. It's -3C, and cloudy. And dark.

Re
Silverhead's Avatar Oh good, you are there. As I said it is cold but it is very sunny and bright in the day time and I can stand that much better than the constant rain and gloom of last week. How has the weather been with you?

Re:
One of the challenges with our Purple Coo site is that it dos not update every time someone posts something. One can sit a long time, waiting for a reply, when one has been sent.

Communication is sometimes not as quick as intended.

Re
Silverhead's Avatar I always have a problem with this when we are both answering the previous comment and usually end up laughing myself to bed.

Re:
I can't tell you how much snow we've had. There's over a foot piled up on the ground, but some of that has been blown about.

Re:
Frances's Avatar Hello Bear and Silverhead. Think that Camilla will be back soon.

Yes, the UK's northern reaches does seem to have some lovely snow. Nothing like that here in New York yet.

We are now seeing the early signs of Christmas arriving hereabouts. Beautiful trees and wreaths and evergreen garlands on sail in the farmer's markets, and also along some sidewalks in various neighborhoods. The scent is so lovely.

I've been painting Christmas cards and still working on my Santa's workshop projects ... gifts well underway.

Great to see you all here. xo

Tomorrow's the First Sunday of Advent, and the weather is right in line with that. Snow and cold.

Re:
Santa's workshop projects? Are things going so poorly that you've hired yourself out as an elf? (I think you'd make a darn good elf if you did!)

Re
Silverhead's Avatar well these two comments seemed to work. How has your day been. Have you been busy.

I've spent a lot of time writing up a new telephone book. Our old one was full of scored out names of people who had died or just gone out of our lives. It's humbling to see how few are left.

Posted by: Silverhead on 28th Nov 2010 at 12:53AM

Re:
Frances's Avatar Bear, I was talking over the phone to one of my brothers today. He once lived for some years in Vancouver and Calgary. He was intrigued to hear that I had some communication with a Canadian Bear. (He absolutely loved Canada!)

Re:
No snow in New York. Hmmmm.

How are things in Albany; any snow there?

Posted by: Rob-bear on 28th Nov 2010 at 12:54AM

Re:
Frances's Avatar Not exactly an elf, Bear. I just like to make gifts for folks, and do a pretty good job with knitting and crocheting. I'd rather spend time making the gifts myself to doing so much shopping in shops. Ironic, of course, since I manage a shop.

Posted by: Frances on 28th Nov 2010 at 12:55AM

Re:
Of course your brother loved Canada. And you would too, if you were up here.

What's not to love?

Oh, I suppose there are mosquitoes in the summer; more nuisance than anything.

Re
Silverhead's Avatar Hi, Frances, Great to be here at the right time tonight. Oh, you always seem so busy. Hasn't Christmas come with a rush. I'm hoping to start my Christmas cards next week.

Re:
Not at all ironic, Frances.

Iconic, perhaps.

Posted by: Rob-bear on 28th Nov 2010 at 12:57AM

Re:
Bear doesn't do Christmas cards. Bear sends a few Christmas e-mails.

With paws is big as mine, it's difficult getting those cards in their envelopes.

And the stamps to NOT taste like hunny!

Re
Silverhead's Avatar We visited Canada about ten years ago and absolutely loved it. We did the usual tourist things and went to the Rockies ,Toronto etc. We really loved Victoria island and I would happily go there forever

Posted by: Silverhead on 28th Nov 2010 at 01:00AM

Re:
Well done, Silverhead! If you went to Toronto, that's my home city. We now live about half way between there are and Vancouver Island.

Posted by: Rob-bear on 28th Nov 2010 at 01:02AM

Re
Silverhead's Avatar On our visit, we didn't catch sight of a big brown bear like you, but we did see a black bear with two cubs and lots of other facinating wildlife.

Posted by: Silverhead on 28th Nov 2010 at 01:03AM

Re:
Frances's Avatar Ahh, thank you, Bear.

About stamps. Here in the States, our stamps are now all the adhesive sticker style. No more licking tasty/untasty glue. I'll have to get over to my post office soon to get a big supply of our holiday themed stamps.

There's a current proposal to stop Saturday delivery of snail mail. I am very much opposed to this notion. Slippery slope, I think. Already our post offices are filled with "self service" machines, that usually ... but not always ... work. It's a way to eliminate employees.

I am pro employee. xo

I still consider myself a refugee from Toronto. Though, to be honest, I wouldn't like to go back there.

Re
Silverhead's Avatar Of course, it's Vancouver Island but the main town was Victoria was it not.?
We felt it was one of the most beautiful places in the world and the boat journey across was just spellbinding.

Posted by: Silverhead on 28th Nov 2010 at 01:06AM

Re:
Strange that you mention that. Frances.

I was in Washington, D.C. many years ago (late 198os, early 1990s somewhere in there). I was surprised to see a letter carrier keeping his appointed rounds on Saturday.

We haven't done Saturday mail delivery in Canada for ages.

Re:
Yes, Silverhead; Victoria is the capital of the province.

My beloved J is from Vancouver. She would like to live there. But either you have to be a peer or nouvea riche to afford Vancouver or Victoria.

We've been in Victoria on several occasions; several different conferences over the years. Would love to live there even more than hunny!

Silverhead's Avatar It's really difficult to have a three way conversation and to be honest our heating has been off for the last hour and I'm becoming frozen to my chair.

Re:
Frances's Avatar Bear, how do we go about becoming either a peer or nouveau riiche? Is it too late? Is there some area on the outskirts of Vancouver that can provide housing for mere mortals?

(I could substitute NYC for Vancouver, because we feel the same sort of housing pressures here.)

Frances's Avatar Nite nite, Silverhead. Wishing you sweet dreams. Hoping to see you here again soon.

Re
Silverhead's Avatar Frances, we also have a Saturday post here, though I'm not sure for how much longer as our Post Office always seems to be in financial trouble. It would be a shame if it goes too.

It's been lovely chatting with you. Hope to meet up with you soon. Night night. Sweet dreams.

Posted by: Silverhead on 28th Nov 2010 at 01:15AM

Re:
Well, to become a peer, you have to have some sort of title form Her Majesty. Or perhaps your could buy one at "Lords R Us."

Nouveau riche? Probably a few million dollars would be sufficient.

J's family actually had a home in North Vancouver. We used to summer there from time to time. But not having work there, we simply couldn't afford to buy it. Now it's gone.

As for living on the outskirts, that would probably be about 150 miles from downtown.

Re:
Frances's Avatar Shoot, Bear, thanks for the explanation. Don't see much chance of peerage or n-riche-age hereabouts.

Just heard a news report of an air crash in Pakistan. Not many details available yet.

Pakistan has been having so many difficulties. Flooding, virtual civil war, all that nasty sort of stuff.

Frances's Avatar Like many NYC apartments, my place is usually very over-heated in winter. I think that the ten floor above mine might not get such aggressive service from the boiler in the basement.

Re:
I'm going to slip upstairs to chat with J for a while. I may not get back.

So, good night Frances; always delightful visiting with you. Hope you have a good Sunday. The Grey Cup is on tomorrow (Canadian equivalent of the SuperBowl). Our team is playing Montreal (which will be very hard to beat).

See you another night, I trust.

Re:
Tiggywinkle's Avatar HI there, Great to catch the owls. I have just come in from a surprise party for my grand nephew who if off to teach English in Vietnam on 6 th December. We had thunder, lightening and snow last night, sunshine to-day and snowing heavily now. The roads are like a skating rink, but thankfully not many cars on the road.
Had drama during the week with the painter, but it is resolved and have a brilliant young man who is even coming in tomorrow. I muffled Tigger up to-day and brought him to The Food and Wine Christmas Fare, for a couple of hours to get him out and about, and it was most enjoyable.

Frances's Avatar President Obama's accident came during one of his regular weekly basketball games. I guess that he is quite a good player, and enjoys inviting various folks (men) to join him in the White House gym.

After the first reports of his split lip and stitches, it was a while before the name of the other player was revealed. All out in the open now.

Frances's Avatar Hello Tiggy...how good that you and Tigger were able to get out today to the Fayre, even with the snow, etc.

Camilla, I agree about the power of faith. It's what I refer to as digging deep when in some sort of troubling time.

Re:
Camilla's Avatar Hello Tiggy.!

Oh how lovely for Tigger to have gone to the Fare too with you. Best of luck to your nephew on his teaching in Vietnam.

Pleased to hear you have your painting resolved with new decorator, my son has had a few hiccups with his decorators re new bathroom, all fine now though.

Very snowy and icy here too Tiggy.

Re:
Tiggywinkle's Avatar Frances, didn't know President Obama had an accident. Things are so depressing here at the moment, I am not listening to the radio, or reading the papers. I agree Camilla, I have great faith in God, in life's possibilities, but sadly none in our government at the moment. We are going to further penalized in the forthcoming budget yet again, and I object strongly that we have to bail out the government and the banks. It is grossly unfair to people who have always lived prudently to loose live savings and then have to take cuts, pay more taxes at every hands turn.

Re:
Frances's Avatar Tiggy, as someone who's just about exactly the same age as you, I so agree. It's a bit annoying to say the least to find that our years of sensible behavior are not going to count for too much if the rest of the macro economic boat is leaky.

I have been watching the news from Ireland with great interest.
