Cowart's Common Room
Pic of the Forenoon

As my grandfather would say.........Another blast from down under where my daughter isn't - indeed hasn't been although she would like to I daresay. She once went to Capetown, I think, part of a conference on Sustainable Development, but that's about the limit of her southerly escapades. Perhaps she could be persuaded to accompany Blossom's hubby (see previous Antartic post) on the 28 ice-breaking voyage across the Ross shelf. It's the sort of thing she would be game for; with Theo in tow of course. All good education for a young child. Ivy could run a course to knit woolly hats for all. Including fish and penguins. Anyway, enough facetiousness for one morning, here are a couple more pics. This time of stripe-y ice. Are you ready? Vests tucked in? Deep breaths!Uploaded ImageUploaded Image

Re:
Withy Brook's Avatar I am still holding my breath - they are so beautiful - and extraordinary. 3 inches of snow here this morning but we can't compete with that.

Re:
Blossomcottage's Avatar These pictures are just fantastic, I would love to go but I am afraid my stomach would limit my boat travel, I get sick on the Victory and that's been in dry dock forever!

I will tell hubby that there is a willing traveller to go with him, although I understand that the trips from Oz are finishing next year as the Icebreaker is past it's sell by date and there is not another one in the pipeline.

There are two very good books about Grandfather Stenhouses adventure
The Lost Men Kelly Tyler Lewis
and The Ice Captain ( which is a bit dry and is the story of granfather Stenhouse)

I can recommend the first.

There is a quote in the ships log written by one of the crew after being the the ice for some months
Quote:
We came looking for adventure we should not now complain

Re:
Arosebyanyothername's Avatar Why is it stripey? Is it some form of polar bear's (yes, I know) installation art?

Re:
Ivy's Avatar Baleen are the hairs a whale has in its mouth to filter out the plankton .

Re:
Arosebyanyothername's Avatar Thanks! I'd have never guessed. Sounds like a useful crossword word.

Re:
Fennie's Avatar I'm surprised, Rosie, you didn't know that seeing that is what (or so I was always led to believe) was what whalebone corsets were made of. Not quite hairs as we know them, a bit stiffer, to filter out krill, but no doubt made from the same material.
