Cowart's Common Room
The Emperor Shot

This huge Red Stag who was a legend has been shot - so very very sad. He was 12, but the reports are that he was in good health and did not need to be culled, although this coud have been the case. He may have been taken legally by trophy hunters who wanted his massive antlers. Adult male deer shot during the rut apparently do not taste very good because of the hormones in their blood stream, so most are shot for the pleasure of shooting them, or for trophies . . .

There are also reports that he was shot be someone from abroad.

Toady's Avatar Absolutely disgusting. He was supposed to be the largest mammal alive in the British Isles and was in good health. Cut down by some bloodthirsty w**ker who seems to think it acceptable to pay to kill. Same with an albino stag that was killed earlier in the year in these parts. I know what I'd do to these so called sports murderers. It involves cutting off balls and hanging them from a tree.

Preseli Mags's Avatar This made me so furious. I do not understand the mentality of someone wanting to shoot such a glorious animal for "sport". He should not have been shot during the rut. I just don't understand it at all. And he was left at the side of a road like litter.

Arosebyanyothername's Avatar I read this too and think it is very sad. Good idea Toady, I'll join you.

Westerwitch's Avatar I find it very sad up here that after the initial excitement of hearing the stags roaring comes the worry as the guns go off and then the horrible silence. There were a few stags roaring near us and then nothing a horrible black silence.

The saddest thing of all is that is most likely to have been someone outside the area possibly even outside GB who came shooting for fun.

Dancing Dog's Avatar I think they're all complete b***tards! I CANNOT understand killing for pleasure. I understand a cull, but to kill for a trophy is horrible. Poor boy.

We had something similar last week, a hunter killed an albino moose. Not only are they extremely rare, but they are sacred to Native Americans. The hunter wished to remain anonymous!!!Evil or Very Mad

Arosebyanyothername's Avatar We had La Chasse go past the Moulin last Thursday. A stream of cars kept coming and going past the house and we heard the hounds baying. We kept Rufus in but later when Jim was walking him on our land he saw deer hoof prints down by the river. Let's hope they escaped.

Westerwitch's Avatar Shudder . . . deer hunting with dogs is particularly barbaric and unnecessary. Even those culling deer agree that the best method of dispatching a deer is one quick clean shot. I hope your deer escaped as well.

Camilla's Avatar This is too terrible, I heard about it when it first happened, could not stop crying, makes my blood boil, know what I would like to do with the ones that killed that gorgeous Stag, 2.3 between the eyes and no two ways about it, in fact I would go to prison for it, absolutely loathe animal cruelty, no need for it at all. It's about time the government made it legal with the courts a heavier sentence for animal cruelty, not a slap on the wrist and tiny fine. Bang up the ones responsible and throw away the key. Loathe hunting too, the animals are not always killed straight away and left to suffer for ages.

Faith's Avatar If it hadn't been in The Mail in the first place, would this murderer have known about this magnificent animal? When I first read about it, I wondered how long it would be before something like this happened. People don't seem to be able to let any special or different animal alone.

Westerwitch's Avatar Sadly Camilla the shooting of the Emperor was very possibly done legally by a licensed killer and it is suspected someone from abroad. But most likely it was done for the trophy of his head and antlers.

Camilla's Avatar Don't think the shooting of Stags legal or not legal should be allowed Westerwitch, and especially not during the rutting season either. Sorry, but I feel very strongly about this, and who want's to show off a beautiful head and antlers on one's wall. it's barbaric.
