Cowart's Common Room
Little folk

There are fairies at the bottom of my garden . . .
I got up at dawn this morning and took my camera down to the 'beach' by the edge of the river near the Moulin.
I could see two or three little people flying about and in the distance a fairy castle. Then along the path came a fairy on a white unicorn. Although my hands were shaking with excitement (and the cold) I managed to get the picture before the sunlight broke through the trees and it all disappeared . . .

Fennie's Avatar That really is a magical spot, isn't it? The sort of spot where you can stand by the water's edge and throw a token into the deep pool; or watch some floating trinket swirl away and be carried in a wide arc underneath the cliffs and down the stream towards the far off sea. All sorts of fairy folk and spirits dwell in that mysterious corner among the damp moss and the ivy, and in that profound, sun-dappled shade beneath the rocks and the trees and the high ferns.

Now whether you saw a unicorn, I doubt. It looks to me more like a unigoat, which I have never seen or heard of before, but then you never know. This is the Cantal after all with its head in the mountain clouds and its feet in that King of Rivers - the Lot.

Anything - even unigoats - are therefore possible in that fairy glade. What did you leave for it to eat? For you have to tame the animal, you know, with silk and gold and sunflowers. It might have been after fat glossy chestnuts, so you could leave some of those, wrapped in a silken shawl and you never know what you might find, if you are quiet and careful and at peace with the fairie world.

Oh and throw a piece of gold into the river. A euro will do with a golden edge, to appease the water nymphs. Their mutterings of appreciation will rustle up and burble through the early morning dew.

Arosebyanyothername's Avatar I think I can tell a goat from a unicorn even in the early morning mist and with sleep still in my eyes.
I was nibbling chocolate biscuits at the time, so perhaps, or should it be perchance, some crumbs may have been left there.
I am not throwing gold or even a into the river - the village children will get it.

Frances's Avatar Rosie, I love this picture, and all the comments that it drew.

In our shop, we have an urban version of fairies that seem to visit when no one is looking and playfully unbutton jackets and cardigans that no one has tried on.

Even when we are pretty vigilent, we never see these buttonhole meddlers.
