Cowart's Common Room
Splenda

I thought I would let the Dukan Dieters know this, and would be interested in comments. I decided to try a couple of the dessert recipes a couple of days ago, using Splenda, which I wasn't familiar with, but seemed like a brilliant alternative to sugar, and recommended and approved for diabetics. As you know I am totally against Artificial Sweetners. Anyhow I am itching like mad, and have broken out in a rash with little spots. I never suffer from allergies, but too busy to give it much thought. By sheer coincidence I was asked yesterday about the possibility of making an ice-cream for Diabetics. I immediately thought of Splenda, but said I would have to research it, and find out more about it. I went on to the site, to see there is contraversy going on about it, and one of reactions is a bad rash. They showed a picture, and it is what I've got. I now have the figure, but scratching like a monkey and blotchy. Grrr. Must drink lots of water to wash it out of my system. Google it to read more.

Re:
Milla's Avatar Interesting. Not a by-product I knew of - I thought the downside of this "perfect product" was its price: by chance, I nearly bought some Splenda yesterday but then saw how expensive it was and put it back on the shelf (about 3 or 4 I think for 125g, or something like that). Luckily I don't particularly like puddings or chocolate so am not missing it but did make the mistake of buying some vanilla yoghurts just to ring the changes from plain. Disgusting. They were made by Dr O...something and were truly horrid with a thin mean sweetness. I knew they contained sweetners (checked that it was aspartame) but can't think why the makers would want to ruin the subtle taste of vanilla with this hideous synthetic sweetness.

Re:
hubby has Agave Syrup on his porridge instead of sugar, it is pricey but a natural low calorie sugar.
Haven't tried cooking with it.
Chemical sweeteners are nasty... full of hideous chemicals, I seem to remember being told that one is a byproduct of the petroleum/agrochemical industry..
We eat butter but less of it, sugar or honey or agave syrup.. The children always had ordinary ribena when young not sugar free. I am not at all a fan of chemically manufactured foods . We've gone back to real bread too.... made by moi, no bread improvers.. etc, read a packet loaf of bread and be shocked at all the unexpected ingredients, and not all are declared
Hope you feel better soon Tiggy, xx.

Re:
Exmoorjane's Avatar Eeek.
Stevia is a natural sweetener, I think...and yup, agave good...
Aspartame is the devil's spawn. They have NO idea what it does to the brain.....

Re:
Milla's Avatar aaargh!!! see that I said, "checked that it was aspartame" NOOOOOOOOOO What I meant was checked that it wasn't aspartame. Have been the biggest anti-aspartame (and me so slim, aaah) campaigner I know of. Devil's spawn indeed. If the boys drink Coke, it's real coke and brush their teeth and NEVER diet coke. Hides head in shame, how could I have (typed so fast??? and) said the wrong thing!!!
Yet to encounter agave - i thought that was a rather fetching succulent plant??

Re:
Camilla's Avatar This such a coinsidence Tiggy, only yesterday I decided that I may need some sugar in my drink, (don't usually take sugar). but think my energy levels were low. Decided to just pop some of my husband's diabetic Splenda into the drink, thought nothing of it really, until I just read your post here, and guess what......yep, was itching all over, could not understand what the reason was, knew it was not the washing powder in my clothes as always have the same brand.

Thanks for alerting this to us Tiggy.
