Arosebyanyothername's Avatar That is ridiculous! I suppose if you offered them a wad of fivers they would refuse those on the same grounds?

Westerwitch's Avatar Honestly - someone on one of our committees just tried to put some leaflets in the library in Callander and been told no they are a fire risk . . . so straight from the horses mouth so to speak.

Westerwitch's Avatar Very possibly Rosie . . . and of course the books offer no fire risk whatsoever.Rolling Eyes

Salle de Bain's Avatar Is toilet paper included in this ban?

Could be a problemLaughing

Inthemud's Avatar You can not be serious!!

Posted by: Inthemud on 16th Sep 2010 at 05:16PM

Fennie's Avatar Why don't you ask them to put it in writing - as it seems such a bizarre request. All libraries take flyers - it's part of a library's job to make information available. Then send what they write to Private Eye!

Posted by: Fennie on 16th Sep 2010 at 05:46PM

Westerwitch's Avatar I really am serious Inthemud that is what they said - fire risk. Yup I like that Fennie - we have never had problems putting leaflets and brochures into libraries before and as this is to promote the 'arts' then yes it is indeed part of their job so to speak to promote it . . .

Faith's Avatar Today, I wanted to take some leaflets into the library in my old home town, but they were shut and I couldnt go back later, so posted them c/o someone I know there - hope this library is not the same as yours WWSad How incredibly ridiculous - are the books themselves not a fire hazard????

Posted by: Faith on 16th Sep 2010 at 06:18PM

Westerwitch's Avatar I don't know why the leaflets are considered a fire hazard - I may well have to phone up and ask because my mind is boggling. Hope your leaflets are less dangerous than ours Laughing

Can you imagine it though if leaflets are fire hazards then no-one anywhere would be able to take them . . . and what about the poor printers . . .

Posted by: Westerwitch on 16th Sep 2010 at 06:25PM

Westerwitch's Avatar You know Salle I think under the circumstances libraries will have to ban ALL paper . . .

CalicoKate's Avatar ShockedShockedShockedShockedThis is totally BONKERS!!!!! ShockedShockedShocked
Would be interesting to contact the Council and ask what their policy is - the Council sponsers your event, and provides the library ...... and is keen to bring income in to the area ...... so it supports the event etc etc etc ad nauseum SOooooo they should help to advertise it at all their points of contact with the public.
It is no wonder that libraries are a dying breed - at least in Argyll they are.

Mollygolver's Avatar Do they really honestly pay somebody to make up these daft rules Rolling EyesRolling EyesRolling Eyes

Posted by: Mollygolver on 16th Sep 2010 at 09:41PM

Westerwitch's Avatar Well you'd have to no-one would be stupid enough to think them up for free.

Posted by: Westerwitch on 16th Sep 2010 at 10:36PM

Cait's Avatar Don't get me started, I could write reams... but that will wait for after I retire (or am made redundant!).
Please phone the library and get more on this WW, I would love to hear.

Posted by: Cait on 16th Sep 2010 at 10:39PM

Westerwitch's Avatar I might just do that I am really keen to get the official line on this one.

Posted by: Westerwitch on 16th Sep 2010 at 10:43PM

Frances's Avatar WW, this no paper in the library bit seems odd.

Please do request a written version of this policy.

I am not at all familiar with your local government structure, but over here, I would most likely call up my most local (micro) government rep and get that person's staff to do a bit of research. Those folks (over here) are very helpful, and often have all sorts of contacts to other part of the official structure.

Camilla's Avatar That is so odd Westerwitch, surely can't be the case, whatever next.!

Posted by: Camilla on 17th Sep 2010 at 02:10AM

Jaynebeth's Avatar Perhaps the librarian has been reading Dante's Inferno or some such book and has scared herself!

Posted by: Jaynebeth on 17th Sep 2010 at 10:14AM

Westerwitch's Avatar Laughing would you believe I dreamt about it last night Rolling Eyes dreamed I marched into the library ready to do battle and two librarians were sitting there with several stacks of brochures in front of them . . . I persuaded them to take six, SIX of ours . . .

Posted by: Westerwitch on 17th Sep 2010 at 10:23AM

Exmoorjane's Avatar *snort* - this is hilarious....or would be if it weren't so totally bonkers. I give up, I really do. Like you say, they'd better watch out for all those dangerous books...awful fire risk, they are. Rolling Eyes

Milla's Avatar just what I was going to say - aren't books made from paper??
