Cowart's Common Room

Today is Monday, June 28, 2010.

It's a "Rainy Days and Mondays Always Get Me Down" kind of day. We had rain, off an on, all weekend. Thunder showers expected this afternoon and evening.

Yesterday the G20 summit meeting wrapped up in Bear's home town, Toronto, Canada. I could watch the action, and still, after all the years of being away, figure out roughly where people were.

Three images stood out for me.

1. The Presidents and Prime Ministers heads of the G20 nations smiling, and waving, and chatting.

2. Vandals, calling themselves anarchists, destroying property. Our Prime Minister condemned their action, saying it was "not the Canadian way." And he was right.

3. The most powerful image for me was also picked up by veteran journalist Susan Ormiston. She was reporting from "street-level" about protests, violent and peaceful. The image she was left with was one of seeing, wherever she turned, rows of "battle-ready" police heavy gear, shields, clubs three deep, waiting. Then charging, and beating and grabbing people, often indiscriminately. I could say to the Prime Minister, "that is not the Canadian way," either. At least the Canadian way as I have known it.

I think I need something stronger than tea to start the day. But for the true tea drinkers, Welsh breakfast. And an assortment of Welsh cakes including some that are gluten-free.

Hope you have a grand day!

P.S.: For those of you who were cheering on the English side at the FIFA World Cup, sorry about the 4-1 loss to Germany. Crying or Very sad

Ivy's Avatar I hate those summits. The money they cost, the carbon footprint they leave and the security measures it takes is so out of proportion to what they result in. We need to save money. Well, er, didn't we all know that ?

Patsy I am quite with you it's only a game but people seem to be forgetting this ....

Preseli Mags's Avatar Bore da Bear and diolch yn fawr for the Welsh breakfast!

The Germans were well-deserved winners of both the football and the Grand Prix in Valencia. All eyes now on Andy Murray at Wimbledon - at least he's already beaten his German opponent!

Those summits always attract such violent protests. The same happened in London too. Awful.
