Cowart's Common Room
Pic of the Day - and name it!

This is the peahen that is still hanging around our yard. I hadn't seen it for a while, but then on one of those very hot days it was up near our gate and I took her out a bowl of water, and then some food. One of my neighbours said that the man at the very small stables nearby, where they have hens too, was feeding her. She settled down in the shade of one of my husband's vehicles and roosted in the trees above. Now she seems to come and go. We chase her out if she comes in our actual garden, and Bill doesnt want her at all, so I am secretly feeding her when he's not around! Well, I can't not - she always eats it, so she must be hungry. It would be hard for a big bird like that to find enough food if no-one fed it, and we feed the pair of pheasants that come in the garden.

What shall I name her? Any suggestions?

Bit of a puzzle here. Where did she get those green rings on her right leg? Can those be used to identify her, and where she came from?

Westerwitch's Avatar I guess she has got herself lost from somewhere. I am glad you are feeding her - I would do the same even if my other half didn't want her around.

I love her irridescant green - call her Emerald . . . Emmie for short.

Faith's Avatar She obviously belongs to someone, Bear, hence the green ring, but she is a bit wary, and short of trapping her with a net, which would be stressful for her and me, I cant tell if she has a tel. no.

Any more name suggestions? (I must be like Anne of Green Gables - I like naming things!)

The green is what catches my attention, too. I like WW's suggestion of Emerald. Or, since it is spring (primavera), you might want to call her Vera (as also in Vera Lynn) with the expectation that you'll meet again.

Snailbeachshepherdess's Avatar A spin off from Phoebe - PhoePe

Fennie's Avatar I would call her Captain - or even Cap'n! She has four rings, you see. But I suppose she would then need a name to reflect her species. All that iridescent emerald is vaguely Victorian - so a Victorian name like Agnes or Eileen might be appropriate. I favour Gertrude, though, which can br abbreviated. Cap'n Gert. If you say it loud enough it sounds like a bird call anyway.

Boudicca23's Avatar She looks like a Clarissa to me...

Faith's Avatar I'm adapting WW's suggestion, and calling her Esmeralda.

Thanks for the suggestions. Fennie, I had an awful singing teacher, a nun called Sister Gertrude. I'd never name anything Gertrude. She came across me and my sister walking with two boys - not in school time - and asked us if our mother knew we were out with boys! Of course, our mother did know, so I could be cheekily righteous and she hated me from that moment on!Laughing

SBS, nice to see you posting. I wondered where you wereVery Happy

Camilla's Avatar Ah, lovely Peahen Faith, you are a kind lady to feed bird, I would do the same and I love naming everything, all my bears have names too.

I was going to suggest Pheobe too like SBS had, but love the name Esmeralda, perhaps Esme for short.
