Cowart's Common Room
Hares and Dryads

Uploaded Image
Well, here we are at last in La France profonde, staying with Rosie and her husband down at t'Mill. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and this morning I saw a hare bounding up the road away from the house. At least I think it was a hare, for it seemed more like a small dog with hare's ears. But then there are all sorts of strange creatures here and the strong sunlight shining through the trees of the forest makes you feel you are in some enchanted place, which, of course, you are. Twice I have expected to see a dryad, sitting on a fallen tree that lies across the old road beside the river where I was hacking brambles yesterday. It seemed exactly the sort of place, in the forest by the sunlit river where a dryad ought to be. But I only saw fairy dragonflies: blue ones, brown ones, big ones, small ones - hissing and buzzing and floating from water plant to water plant and in the wider spaces above great cloudy yellow butterflies, like bits of canary cotton-wool flapping lazily around the walnuts. The beauty of this place is that you can almost hear the plants growing, the carbon deficit of our flights is already converted into six more inches on 2000 trees and the bodies of a million insects (non-biting, of course) which the little lizards that dart around at our feet lasso with their tongues. After a couple of days I am beginning to relax. I shall sit on a stone by the river and let the current was over my toes.

European places have an enchantment you don't find in Canadian cities. We're WAY TOO FUNCTIONAL in our way of thinking and building.

Glad you're having such a wonderful time. Wish I were there.
