Cowart's Common Room

Today is Monday, May 3, 2010.

According to The Bears' Book of More or Less Accurate Facts, there is a Bank Holiday in Britain. Which means (as the Bear understands it) that the bankers get the day off (and so everybody else takes the day off, too). Except, of course, Bobbies, Fire Fighters, Nurses, Doctors, etc. the REALLY IMPORTANT people in the country. (This theory is confounded, however, by the fact that British Politicians are busy working to get elected/re-elected. My son, in his wisdom, says, "Don't vote; it only encourages them!" That's a digression; sorry.) Bear suspects things will either be very quiet or very busy around skool, and is prepared for either.

On this day in history:
Washington, D.C. is incorporated as a city, in 1802.
The Canterbury and Whitstable Railway is opened, in 1830. It is the first steam hauled passenger railway to issue season tickets and include a tunnel.
The poem "In Flanders Fields" is written by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel Dr. John McCrae, in 1915. (January 28, 1918, while still commanding No. 3 Canadian General Hospital at Boulogne, France, McCrae died in that hospital of pneumonia and complications.)

I trust no untoward complications befall you. To aid in your well-being, there is Early Grey (or is it Grey Earl?) tea in the common Room, with ginger snaps in the biscuit tins.

Hope you have a grand day.

P.S.: I was finally able to clean up the mess caused by Her Ladyship, Miss Sadie, earlier today. If you don't understand that see the post two prior to this one, entitled, "There once was a pup . . ." Blink Exclamation Sad Sad
