Cowart's Common Room
Crazy Daisy!

I was strolling around the garden last night tut-tutting over the weeds brought on by recent warmth and showers. I suddenly got the feeling that someone was smiling up at me from the ground. A common or garden daisy, but with multiple heads...never seen one like that before.

Re:
Thought some of you might be interested to know what this phenomenon is called.

Fasciation; it occurs when some kind of damage has been caused to the plants cellular structure. It usually occurs when one of the following had occured; a random genetic mutation; bacterial infection; viral infection; mechanical or chemical injury by animals, frost. machinery and so on.

Whether it recurs or not depends on how the damage came to be in the first place. I occasionally see it on my roses, where aphids have caused damage to lush young growth.

This is a dandelion I found a few years ago - I blogged about it on the old CL site, there were loads of them this year, from two headed ones to a massive six-header! Very odd, have not noticed them in subsequent years, I wonder if the verges had been sprayed early in the season that year or something?

Never seen a daisy though - it's fab!
