Cowart's Common Room
Scam or not?

I had two calls yesterday, and one just now on our land line.

The first two callers said they were from Barclaycard and wanted me to confirm my date of birth - which I would not do even though they said it was important.

Today's caller asked for me year of birth. To see what she would say, I said 1927 straight away without hesitation, whereupon she hesitated and asked me to repeat it which I did. Then she said there was some anomaly and would I give my home address, which I said I wouldnt. Then she said it was important and I should go into the nearest Barclays bank asap.

What do you think? Scam or what? Do you think I should go into the bank on Monday?

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Faith, In these situations ask them for a number to call back on. If they are genuine they will give a number which will be a call centre and you can get back to them. can't hurt to go into the bank on Monday.

Re:
Peterwf's Avatar I would go to the bank on monday.
Did you try a 1471 to see if the callers number was recorded.
The same banks phone number shows up when they call me.

I am sure that any reputable company would prefer you to exercise the caution you did.

Re:
Faith, DONT WAIT!!!
Get your bank statement, find the number on the back and phone them NOW!!! This is exactly what happened to me, see my post in the Private Forum. Except, it has happened twice to me in a month with two different accounts.
The first one was a series of small charges, nothing much but way outside my normal spending pattern, a few hundred pounds. The second, a different card was for 1450.00 for an airline ticket. If you don't get in touch you could be in very serious trouble. One of my cards is now under police and fraud squad investigation, and it is almost making me cancel all my cards. The number I was called on does not appear on my statement, so I thought it was a scam, but called the number on the back of my statement to check. I'm glad I did, or I would have been held liable. So please, don't wait until Monday or it could go seriously against you.

Re:
Ivy's Avatar Well it could have to do with a big fraud regarding Visa and some other credit cards, that make banks change all the bank cards here at the moment. I would indeed go to Barclays on Monday . If its not a genuine caller than they surely should know about this anyway.
