Patsy's Avatar If you don't like the idea of sedatives ( and they don't always work) there is a new natural product available at your vets called Zylkene specifically for stresses such as fireworks.

It is not a sedative or tranquilisor in the accepted sense. It contains casein from milk protein. The body then breaks the casein down into a natural opiod. No side effects have been associated with the use of Zylkene and is proven to help manage stress in cats and dogs. Perhaps this is why a warm milky drink at bedtime knocks me out!

It is palatable and easy to give - open the capsule and mix the powder with food or a treat such as cheese or tuna. The capsule can also be given whole. Zylkene is hypoallergenic, preservative free and lactose free. Use for short term or long term stress. Zylkene is non-chemically manufactured to human pharmaceutical standards.

But you need to start it before the stress period if possible.
So far I've had lots of positive feedback from clients.

Salle de Bain's Avatar Thankfully Guy Fawkes is not part of Irish history....
I am beginning to form views about fireworks....not just re: animal safety, but also the cost, the carbon footprint re: manufacture and supply, the debris afterwards etc. It's not as though it's one of lifes necessities now is it?

I've heard of several deaths over the years too from explosions in firework factories...not to mention injuries to the public. Is it worth it I ask myself, or is it time to invent a new and safer/environmentally friendlier way to celebrate Guy Fawkes night?

Camilla's Avatar Thank you kindly Ivy.

Thank you kindly too Patsy for the info on Zylkene, will bear that in mind for my pets in future. Daisy has no idea at the moment that loud bangs may happen later from nearby properties, she loathes fireworks and gets very anxious indeed. I should have sorted out this for her sooner.

I also worry about Horses in the fields, there are five Horses and a Pony in nearby field adjoining our property, but think the kind owners may have put them in the stables tonight.
